Brecker Grossmith were proud to host talented artist Lewis Hazelwood Horner’s exhibition of paintings telling the story of one London’s finest shops – the James Smith and Sons Umbrella and Cane store on New Oxford Street, London.

We’ve been managing this commercial property for over twenty five years and remains a remarkable icon in the West End. The exhibition took place at neighbouring 49 New Oxford Street which is now the home of Joseph Fine Art Gallery.

SInce that exhibition in 2014 his oil painting of a workshop scene has won one of the most prestigious prizes for figurative art.

The Columbia Threadneedle prize was created in 2008 to breathe life into a more traditional art genre which, with the strength of abstract, conceptual and performance art, was falling out of fashion.

According to this piece in The Guardian, his work “Salt in Tea”, suggests Hazelwood-Horner may have been the victim of the workers’ practical jokes.

The artist has won £20,000 and a solo show for a wider body of his work at the Mall Galleries in London later this year.  In an unprecedented exchange, over half of the works selected for the prize are touring to Palazzo Strozzi in Florence, for a four-week exhibition opening in July 2016,
